10-year will utilize capabilities expanding to support NOAA’s climate and weather forecasting.
The systems will be designed, deployed and managed by GDIT and utilized to execute intense modeling of climate and weather patterns for use in forecast products that are generating behind the National Weather Service.
The single-award indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) blanket purchase agreement (BPA) holds a total estimated value of $505 million. It features a base period of eight years using one alternative. Through this contract, GDIT will receive task orders related to high performance computing (HPC) deliverables, including an initial task order of $150 million.
“We’re excited to expand our work with NOAA and support their crucial weather forecasting assignment through GDIT’s supercomputing and information center solutions,” said Vice President Kevin Connell, head of GDIT’s Science and Engineering Business Area. “Through this contract, the National Weather Service will enlarge their current computing power by more than 200 percent and continue to optimize their capacity to give accurate and timely weather forecasts. On behalf of GDIT’s company-wide High Performance Computing Center of Excellence, we look forward to supporting the National Weather Service’s numerical weather prediction and assisting NOAA protect property and lives.”
“This contract represents an important step in NOAA’s travel to foster more precise weather forecasts,” said Senior Vice President Paul Nedzbala, head of GDIT’s Federal Civilian Division. “GDIT is pleased to combine NOAA and provide impressive innovations that support our federal customers and their important assignment.”
GDIT will deploy two HPC systems at two sites on electrical energy grids that are separate to support the numerical weather prediction package of models used in weather forecasting.
The contract provides two computing systems with one functioning as the system and the other primarily used for growth when functioning as the backup. This can ensure operational readiness in case one system goes down, enabling the transition of operations from 1 website to another within minutes.
