The headquarters of prior Air Force Space Command in Colorado Springs will be phased out. The Space Force HQ is being stood up at the Pentagon.
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Space Force headquarters offices at the Pentagon will begin a slow growth during the next year as new positions are filled and officers from the former Air Force Space Command move into the new service.
One of those officers is Brig. Gen. DeAnna Burt, director of Space Force communications and operations at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs.
“We’ve been slowly but surely building what is known as the Office of the Chief of Space Operations,” Burt told SpaceNews by phone from Colorado Springs.
Burt is helping Chief of Space Operations Gen. John Raymond arrange the Space Force headquarters.
“The headquarters at Colorado Springs will go away in the next calendar year.”
Burt was nominated for also the status of major general and another star. In addition to hundreds of other Air Force officers Burt linking the Space Force and this autumn will leave the Air Force.
“That is when I get to use the cool blue ribbon,” she said speaking to the Space Force battle dress uniform.
The Space Force headquarters that is initial will have about 200 individuals, or a fraction of the magnitude of the other services’ headquarters. Burt reported the Space Force staff because of its small size will probably need significant support from the Air Force.
The Space Force is predicted to be approximately 16,000 personnel. For today the majority are airmen assigned to the Space Force. During the following year, tens of thousands of airmen out of space-focused organizations are expected to move over.
Space Force HQ vs Space Command HQ
U.S. Space Control was established only a couple of months prior to the Space Force was signed into legislation. A lot of individuals conflate both even though they are separate organizations. Burt said she’d prefer the public to clearly understand the difference.
In a conflict, those forces would be assigned to a command. U.S. Space Control is among the U.S. military’s 11 combatant commands.
The Air Force recently announced an open bidding procedure to select the future place of U.S. Space Command headquarters, which for now will remain at Colorado Springs.
The Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps’ headquarters are located in the Pentagon. The Space Force would be no different.
Burt explained the new procedure for selecting the location of U.S. Space Command headquarters gives the Air Force an opportunity to consider fresh options. “General Raymond believes it’s exciting and provides us an chance to look at some different places,” she explained.
‘The discussion that we are having right now is where will U.S. Space Command headquarters proceed? The Space Force, the service headquarters, will probably be in D.C. with the other service headquarters,” said Burt.
If U.S. satellites came under attack it would be the duty of U.S. Space Control to advocate a plan of action to the secretary of defense and the president. The operators and equipment that would be required to protect satellites and react to adversaries’ actions would be offered from the Space Force.
